Unlocking Bone Health: The Power of Plant-Based Proteins and Minerals

At ATURA Proteins, we’re passionate about advancing health and nutrition through innovative plant-based solutions. Our recent collaboration with Kozior et al., 2024, brings compelling insights into the potential of plant-sourced dietary minerals and proteins, particularly for bone health. Here’s what the study uncovered and why it matters.

The Intersection of Nutrition and Bone Health

Bone health relies on two key components: protein and calcium. Protein forms the structural matrix of bone, while calcium strengthens it, contributing to about one-third of bone mass. However, vegetarians and vegans may face challenges in maintaining bone mineral density (BMD), potentially increasing fracture risk. This study explored a novel solution—combining plant-sourced calcium and protein—to address these gaps.

The Study: Methods and Findings

The study compared the effects of a plant-based supplement (a blend of marine-sourced calcium and ATURA’s fava bean protein isolate) with mineral water. Here’s what stood out:

  1. Rapid Calcium Uptake
Within just 30 minutes of ingesting the supplement, calcium levels in the blood increased, demonstrating rapid bioavailability.
  2. Reduction in Bone Breakdown
Markers of bone breakdown, such as CTX, decreased significantly, suggesting a slower rate of bone resorption—a key factor in reducing fracture risk.
  3. Hormonal Benefits for Bone Health
Levels of gut hormones GIP and GLP-1, which support calcium absorption and bone health, surged after consuming the supplement.
  4. Synergistic Effects
The combination of marine-sourced calcium and fava bean protein proved more effective than mineral water, optimizing bioavailability and reducing bone breakdown.

The Implications: Optimizing Plant-Based Nutrition

This study is a game-changer for plant-based nutrition. By co-ingesting calcium derived from marine red algae with ATURA’s fava bean protein, consumers can enhance calcium absorption and reduce bone loss. The results also suggest a promising alternative to dairy-based calcium sources, aligning with growing demand for sustainable, plant-based solutions.
